Wingman Metrics
You don't expect much from the wine list at an Indonesian restaurant, and that's exactly why Gado Gado keeps surprising people. The list is short but it reads like someone actually thought about what works with sambal and coconut milk. That someone clearly has opinions — good ones.
The list leans heavily into aromatic whites and lighter reds, which is the right call for a menu built around bold, layered spice. Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows up alongside Alsatian-influenced whites and a Brooks Riesling from Oregon that might as well have been designed for beef rendang. The Forlorn Hope Albariño is a left-field pick that earns its spot, and the Tablas Creek Esprit de Tablas Blanc brings a Rhône-leaning white that handles rich, herby dishes without flinching. Finger Lakes and Germany round out a regional spread that punches well above its weight for a restaurant that could've just thrown a Chardonnay and a Cab on there and called it done.
Glass pour specifics aren't fully listed, but estimated pours run $10–$16, which is reasonable for Portland right now. The by-the-glass program likely mirrors the bottle list's aromatic-forward philosophy — we'd push hard for whatever Riesling they're pouring. If the Brooks 'Ara' is available by the glass, order it immediately.
Brooks 'Ara' Riesling 2022 — $42
At $42 a bottle for a wine that retails around $25, the markup is fair and the wine is flat-out excellent with spicy food. Off-dry, high-acid, and built for heat — this is the move at Gado Gado.
Forlorn Hope Que Saudade Albariño 2022
Most people skip past Albariño on a menu like this, but Forlorn Hope's version has the salinity and citrus tension to cut right through peanut sauce and fried shallots. It's a weird, wonderful pick that rewards the curious.
Amapas Tinto 2021
At $55 with a 72% markup over retail, this is the worst value on the list. A heavier red is also the wrong call for most of this menu. Pass.
Brooks 'Ara' Riesling 2022 + Beef rendang
The rendang's slow-cooked spice and caramelized coconut richness need something bright and slightly sweet to keep the palate alive. The 'Ara' Riesling does exactly that — its off-dry profile cools the heat without wiping it out.
Wednesday — All bottles 50% off after 8pm
🎲 The Bottom Line
Wednesday after 8pm, all bottles half price — that's a standing date you should put in your calendar right now. Even at full price, Gado Gado's thoughtful, spice-friendly list is one of the more interesting things happening on the Northeast Portland wine scene.
Northwest 23rd · Portland · Rustic French / Northwest French
St. Jack is the rare Portland restaurant where the wine list earns as much respect as the kitchen. The French-Oregon axis is well-executed, the staff knows what they're talking about, and the pot lyonnais format alone is worth the trip.

Tope is a Wild Card in the best sense — a rooftop taqueria that's quietly assembled a natural and low-intervention wine list worth paying attention to. If you're eating here and only drinking mezcal cocktails, you're leaving half the story on the table.

Bullard Tavern is the Wild Card badge in its purest form — a smoked-meat joint that snuck in a genuinely considered wine list without making a fuss about it. Send a friend here if they think good wine and good brisket can't coexist.

King Tide earns its Wild Card badge by hiding a genuinely curious, well-priced wine list inside what could easily have been a forgettable hotel seafood room. If you're eating oysters on the Willamette, you could do a lot worse than Domaine de l'Écu in your glass.
