The wine list at Fish Hopper arrives looking like it was designed to reassure, not to excite — familiar names, familiar regions, nothing that's going to make you feel like you're making a wrong turn. It's a tourist-friendly waterfront spot on Cannery Row, and the list knows its audience: people who want a good glass of California Chardonnay while watching the harbor seals do their thing. That's not a knock, exactly — it just sets expectations clearly.
Fifty-plus bottles lean hard into California, with a predictable Central Coast and Napa bent — think J. Lohr, Francis Ford Coppola, and Rombauer holding down the recognizable end of things. There's a token gesture toward variety with the Avissi Prosecco and Seaglass Riesling, but the list is otherwise a parade of names you've seen at every airport wine bar from SFO to LAX. The Central Coast does show up meaningfully with Bernardus and Roar, which are genuinely worth your attention. No Burgundy, no Rhône, no Italian beyond the Cavit Pinot Grigio — the old world simply doesn't exist here.
The by-the-glass program runs 15-20 options, which is generous for a spot of this size, and covers the basics across whites, reds, and bubbles. You're not getting any rotating selections or staff-driven pours here — this is a set-it-and-forget-it program built around crowd-pleasing standbys like Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and Line 39 Pinot Noir. Good enough to drink, but don't expect anyone at the table to be surprised.
Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc — $14
Bernardus is a legitimate Carmel Valley producer with real terroir credibility — finding it by the glass at a waterfront tourist restaurant at a reasonable pour price is a minor win. Drink this over the Kim Crawford every single time.
Roar Pinot Noir
Roar makes serious Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot that routinely punches above its price point — it's the one bottle on this list with genuine regional character and winemaking intention. Most tables will order the Estancia without a second thought, which is their loss.
Rombauer Chardonnay
Rombauer has become the default 'fancy' Chardonnay for people who don't drink much wine, and restaurants charge accordingly — you're paying a significant premium for the name recognition here when the Hess Shirtail or J. Lohr will drink just as well for this food at a fraction of the cost.
Seaglass Riesling + Cioppino
The Cioppino's rich tomato-shellfish broth needs acidity to cut through it, and a touch of residual sweetness to balance the heat. Riesling does exactly that work — it's one of the most food-friendly grapes on the planet and it's hiding right there on the list.

Fish Hopper is a reliable waterfront pour — not a destination for wine lovers, but not an embarrassment either. Go for the view, drink the Bernardus or the Roar, and save the deep cellar hunting for somewhere down the coast.
