Walking into Enoteca Athena feels like someone's nonna accidentally opened a wine bar in coastal Maine โ and we mean that as the highest compliment. The warm wood, open kitchen, and familial energy immediately signal that this is not a place chasing trends. The wine list follows suit: focused, confident, and unapologetically rooted in the Mediterranean.
The list leans hard into Greece and Italy, which is exactly the right call for a kitchen cooking in those traditions. Greek grapes like Moschofilero and Assyrtiko show up with the kind of intentionality you rarely see outside of a dedicated wine bar, let alone in Brunswick, Maine. The Piemonte presence rounds out the Italian side with similar seriousness. The list isn't vast, but every bottle feels chosen rather than defaulted to โ a small list done right beats a bloated one done lazily.
By-the-glass specifics weren't fully documented during our research, but the pricing structure we did find โ glass pours in the $11โ$12 range โ suggests an accessible, unpretentious program. If the kitchen is pouring the Moschofilero and Estate Assyrtiko by the glass, that's already more interesting than most restaurants in any zip code.
Montecucco Rosso 'Rigoleto' โ $11
Retailing around $20 and pouring for $11 a glass, this is practically a gift. Montecucco is Brunello's underdog neighbor โ same Sangiovese DNA, fraction of the price, and Enoteca Athena is passing that value straight to you.
Estate Assyrtiko
Most people in Maine have never ordered an Assyrtiko in their lives, which means they've been missing one of the world's great food wines. Mineral, taut, and built for seafood โ in a coastal state like Maine, this should be everyone's house white.
Chardonnay 'Critone'
At $12 a glass it's technically fair value, but when you're sitting in front of a list with Greek whites this compelling, ordering a Chardonnay feels like going to Tokyo and eating at Applebee's. There are better adventures on this list.
Moschofilero + Grilled seafood or mezze spread
Moschofilero is a floral, high-acid white that cuts through olive oil and brightens anything from the sea. With the rustic Mediterranean kitchen Enoteca Athena is running, this is the right glass in the right room.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Enoteca Athena is doing something genuinely rare: a focused, honest wine list built around the actual cuisine it's serving, priced like they actually want you to drink. If you're anywhere near Brunswick, this is the wine stop.
East End ยท Portland ยท Sushi / Japanese
Mr. Tuna isn't a wine destination โ it's a great sushi spot that happens to have two sensible, well-chosen bottles and a local can that makes the experience feel intentional. Come for the hand rolls, drink the Vinho Verde, and don't overthink it.

Scales is playing a different game than the tourist-trap seafood spots on either side of it โ the wine list is genuinely Old World-focused and well-matched to the food, which is rare and worth noting. If you're eating clams and mussels on the Portland waterfront, this is where you want to be doing it with a glass in hand.

Regards isn't trying to be a wine bar, but whoever built this list understands exactly what the food needs and went hunting for it. If you're in Portland and want a bottle that actually earns its place on the table, this is the move.

Chaval is punching above its weight class for a neighborhood brasserie in Portland โ the list is small but curated by someone who actually cares, with pricing that doesn't punish curiosity. If you're open to going off the beaten path (xarel-lo, South African grenache blanc), this is a genuinely rewarding room to drink in.
