Wingman Metrics
You're on a private island in Southeast Alaska, floatplane still echoing in your ears, and someone hands you a wine list. That alone earns points. The list skews hard California, which makes complete sense when the kitchen is slinging Alaskan king crab and fresh-caught salmon β that coastal-to-coastal handshake actually works.
This is a 50-100 bottle program with a clear California identity β Sonoma-Cutrer, Cakebread, Stag's Leap, Jordan, Duckhorn, Kendall-Jackson. You're not going to find an obscure Jura Chardonnay or a skin-contact Slovenian anything here, and that's fine. The list doesn't try to be adventurous; it tries to be reliably impressive for guests who just want a great bottle with their halibut. Wine Spectator handed them an Award of Excellence starting in 2025, which tracks β the cellar is curated with intention, even if it won't surprise anyone. Gaps exist outside California: Old World options appear thin, and anything south of the 45th parallel on the globe is basically absent.
With 8-15 by-the-glass options, there's enough to navigate a multi-course meal without repeating yourself. Expect to find Sonoma-Cutrer and Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve in the rotation as workhorses. Given the remote all-inclusive lodge format, glass pours likely stay consistent rather than rotating frequently β this is a curated, stable program, not a by-the-glass playground.
Jordan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon β $80
Jordan punches well above its price bracket and in a remote luxury lodge context, it's likely the most honest markup on the list. Reliable, food-friendly, and genuinely delicious with red meat or the richer crab preparations.
Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot
Everyone sleeps on Duckhorn Merlot because Sideways happened twenty years ago. This is a serious, structured wine that holds its own against most Cabs on the list and goes surprisingly well with the bolder Alaskan seafood dishes. Order it before someone else figures it out.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
KJ Vintner's Reserve is a grocery store staple that retails around $15. In a luxury lodge at elevated prices, you're paying a steep premium for a wine that has no business being the headliner. Spend the extra few dollars and get the Cakebread or Sonoma-Cutrer instead.
Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay + Spotted Prawns
Sonoma-Cutrer's Russian River Ranches Chardonnay has the right balance of bright acidity and restrained oak to complement the natural sweetness of Alaskan spotted prawns without bulldozing them. This is the pairing the kitchen probably intended.
π² The Bottom Line
Dove Island Lodge is the kind of Wild Card you can't manufacture β a proper wine program on a private island in Alaska, managed by a certified sommelier, built to match some of the best seafood you'll ever eat. The list won't win points for adventurousness, but in this context, it doesn't need to.
Scott's Addition Β· Richmond Β· American, Seafood
Lillian is the rare spot where the wine list is more ambitious than the address suggests β a focused, France-and-Italy-forward program with legit producers, a knowledgeable floor lead, and bottle prices that don't feel punitive. Send a friend here, tell them to sit at the counter, order oysters, and ask PJ what's open.

River North Β· Chicago Β· American, Seafood
Terrace 16 earns its Wine Spectator badge and delivers a respectable, California-and-France-focused list in one of Chicago's most dramatic dining rooms. Just don't expect to be surprised β the wine is as reliable as the skyline view, and nearly as expensive.

Mariner's isn't trying to be a wine destination β it's a waterfront restaurant in Natchitoches that happens to take its California Cab and Chardonnay seriously, and the Wine Spectator credential is earned. Send your friends here for the view and the Steak Oscar, and trust that the wine list won't let you down.
