You sit down, the bay is right there, the bread hits the table, and the wine list follows shortly after — short, California-forward, and built entirely around not scaring anyone off. It's a tourist-area list that at least has the decency to lean into its backyard with some Santa Lucia Highlands and Central Coast representation.
The list skews heavily Californian with nods to Italy via Tuscany and Piedmont — appropriate given the restaurant's heritage, even if the Italian section doesn't run deep. Napa shows up for the crowd that reflexively orders Napa, and the Central Coast gets some deserved shelf space. There's no adventurous detour into anything obscure, and the list won't challenge you, but the regional logic makes sense for a classic Monterey seafood house. Don't come here hunting for Burgundy or Barolo — this is a California-or-nothing situation.
Six to ten options by the glass is a respectable range for a wharf restaurant, and the fact that they rotate at all puts them ahead of most of the tourist traps within walking distance. The pours lean predictable — expect Chardonnay and Cab to anchor the list — but there's enough range to match a bowl of cioppino without defaulting to beer.

Mer Soleil's Reserve is a genuinely good bottle from a region that punches above its weight for Chardonnay. At this price point in a waterfront Monterey restaurant, it's not getting gouged — and it's a natural fit alongside anything pulled out of the bay.

Most tables here will default to Napa without blinking, but Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay — cooler climate, more acid, more structure — is actually the smarter call with the seafood-heavy menu. Mer Soleil's Reserve is the list's most thoughtful bottle and it's getting overlooked.
Generic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Ordering a big Napa Cab at a seafood restaurant on the wharf is a swing-and-miss on multiple levels. The wine's going to fight the food, the markup on California Cab at tourist-adjacent restaurants is rarely kind, and you're ignoring better options that actually make sense with what's on your plate.
Mer Soleil Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay + Cioppino
Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay has the acidity to cut through a tomato-and-seafood broth without getting swallowed by it. Mer Soleil's Reserve brings enough body to stand up to the richness of the stew while keeping the whole thing tasting like the coast — which is exactly where you're sitting.
