First Impression
Walking into CW Prime at the St. Regis Longboat Key, the wine list feels exactly like the room — polished, confident, and not trying to surprise you. It's a California-forward steakhouse list built for people who know what they want and are prepared to pay for it. Robert Goggin is on staff to guide the way, which matters more than most places will admit.
Selection Deep Dive
The list runs 150-250 bottles deep with a clear California spine — Caymus, Silver Oak, Jordan, Far Niente, Duckhorn, Stag's Leap, and Opus One are all present and accounted for. If you grew up ordering Napa Cab with a ribeye, this list was written for you. What's missing is any real adventure outside that comfort zone — there's no Burgundy rabbit hole, no interesting Rhône detour, no natural wine curiosity. Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence (2025) is well-earned for what it is, but what it is has a fairly defined ceiling.
By the Glass
Twenty to thirty-five pours by the glass is genuinely impressive for a resort steakhouse, and it suggests the kitchen and the bar are taking glass rotation seriously. The breadth here means you can work through several California producers without committing to a bottle, which is the right call on a first visit. We'd lean on Robert Goggin to point you toward what's freshest.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon — $50–$80 (est. bottle)
Jordan is the sweet spot on a list that quickly escalates into triple digits. It's a reliably well-made Alexander Valley Cab that drinks above its price point — without the prestige markup that Opus One or Silver Oak carry at this kind of address.
Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot
Everyone at the table is going for the Cabernet, which means the Duckhorn Merlot is sitting there being criminally overlooked. It's a genuinely complex Napa Merlot that holds its own against any steak on the menu and tends to get priced more fairly than its Cab-dominated neighbors.
Opus One
Opus One is a great wine. It's also the most aggressively marked-up bottle on lists like this, and at a resort steakhouse in Longboat Key, you're paying for the logo as much as the liquid. Save it for a restaurant where you're getting cellar pricing — here, you're just paying the premium twice.
Far Niente Chardonnay + Jumbo Lump Crab Cake
Far Niente Chardonnay is rich and structured enough to stand up to the sweetness of fresh Gulf crab without bulldozing it. The wine's toasty oak and citrus backbone keep things clean while the butter in the preparation finds a natural echo. It's the most obvious call on the menu and it's obvious for good reason.
✔️ The Bottom Line
CW Prime is a well-executed resort steakhouse wine program — California-focused, properly stored, guided by a knowledgeable sommelier, and priced like the Gulf-front address it occupies. Send a friend here if they love Napa Cab and aren't looking to be challenged.
