Thursday Saves It, But Just Barely

The list reads like the wine aisle at your nearest grocery chain — Meiomi, Kim Crawford, Josh Cellars, La Marca. There's nothing technically wrong here, but there's nothing exciting either. It's a perfectly safe Italian restaurant wine list that plays it so safe it nearly puts itself to sleep.
The region focus gestures toward Tuscany, Piedmont, and the Veneto, which is exactly right for an Italian spot — but the actual bottles we can confirm are all domestic crowd-pleasers and global supermarket staples. Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is as close to Italian authenticity as the list gets, and even that is the most predictable Alto Adige option imaginable. California fills in the gaps with the Coppola Diamond Claret and Josh Cellars Cab, both of which feel like they belong on a hotel banquet menu. If there are real Italian producers hiding deeper in the list, they're not showing up in the data — and a list should lead with its best stuff.
Six to twelve by-the-glass options is a reasonable spread for a neighborhood Italian, but without confirmed glass-pour selections we can't tell you which bottles make the cut. Given the bottles we do know about, expect the usual suspects — Pinot Grigio, something red from California, maybe a Prosecco. Hopefully the La Marca pours by the glass, because at $36 a bottle with a 140% markup, you'd want a way to try before you commit.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2022 — $48
It's still a 100% markup on a $24 retail bottle, which is the restaurant industry standard and technically the least egregious pricing on the list. On a Thursday it drops to $24 — which is literally retail price. That's the move.
Coppola Diamond Collection Claret Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
It's not a hidden gem in the traditional sense, but the Coppola Claret is a softer, more food-friendly red than the Josh Cab and actually works with Italian food. Most people reach for the Meiomi or the Josh without thinking — this one deserves a second look, especially if pasta's on the table.
Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon California 2020
A 171% markup on a $14 retail wine is hard to stomach. Josh Cellars is fine at home on a Tuesday. At $38 in a restaurant, it's just overpriced mediocrity. There are better options on this same list.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2022 + Calamari fritti
Crisp, high-acid Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige cuts right through the fried batter and brightens the lemon. It's a classic Italian-restaurant pairing for a reason, and it's the most honest wine on the list.
Thursday — All bottles of wine and champagne are half-price every Thursday, paired with half-price appetizers. This is a standing weekly program — not a limited-time promotion.
❌ The Bottom Line
There's one reason to come here for wine: Thursday. Half-price bottles on a standing weekly basis is a genuinely good deal, especially on the Santa Margherita. Any other night, the markups are steep and the list doesn't justify them.
Sylvania / West Toledo Border · Toledo · Modern French / New American
Element 112 has one of the most genuinely surprising wine lists in the Toledo area — Old World depth that punches well above its zip code — but the California markups are a tax on laziness you should refuse to pay. Come on a Wednesday, stick to the European side of the list, and you'll leave very happy.

Outback Toledo's wine list is a corporate placeholder, not a wine program — it keeps the table from going dry but gives you zero reasons to think carefully about what you order. Stick to the Ste. Michelle Riesling or save your enthusiasm for the Bloomin' Onion.

The wine list at Olive Garden Toledo is a corporate afterthought dressed up as a selection — overpriced relative to quality, built to please no one in particular, and completely interchangeable with every other location in the country. Order the Chianti if you must, drink the Moscato if you want something fun, and save your real wine curiosity for a restaurant that earns it.

Carrabba's Toledo isn't a destination for wine — but it's not an embarrassment either. The Ruffino Chianti Classico alone earns its keep, and if you stick to the Italian side of the list, you'll drink reasonably well without drama.

Black Cloister is one of Toledo's better craft beer destinations, and the wine list knows it — it's not trying to compete, just to exist. Order the beer, love the beer, but if someone at your table insists on wine, the Angeline Pinot at $5 a glass is at least priced like they respect you.

Cooper's Hawk Toledo does exactly what it sets out to do: deliver approachable, house-made wine in a comfortable setting at fair prices. Just don't come here expecting to discover anything new — this is a safe harbor, not an adventure.

Marisi is a reliable Italian wine list with genuine ambition hiding behind a steep markup structure — the producers are right, the regions are right, but you'll pay for the privilege. Go for the Produttori Barbaresco and the Pre-Phylloxera Barbera, and you'll leave satisfied.

Via Italian Table is punching above its weight class for a neighborhood Italian on Shrewsbury Street — a sommelier, 35 BTG options, and serious producers across Italy and California make this a genuinely good wine destination. The markups on prestige bottles are restaurant-standard steep, but the glass pour program keeps things honest for normal humans.

Savoie isn't a wine destination, but it's a solid neighborhood Italian with enough on the list to drink well — especially on a Wednesday when select bottles go half-price. Show up for Wine Wednesday, order the Super Tuscan, and you'll leave happy.
