Great Hike, Forgettable Pour

Wingman Metrics
The wraparound porch with Flatirons views is genuinely one of the best places to drink anything in Boulder — which makes it all the more disappointing when the wine list lands on your table. A handful of Canyon Road labels and a smattering of European names that feel more like an afterthought than a curated program. The setting is doing all the heavy lifting here.
The list leans hard on Canyon Road across the board — Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Cabernet — which is fine for a casual park canteen but less fine when you're charging restaurant prices for a $7 grocery store bottle. There are glimmers of something better: the El Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Tempranillo from Rioja and the Gilles Robin Papillon Syrah from the Rhône are legitimate wines that belong on a more ambitious list. The Taittinger Brut La Française is a respectable Champagne call, even if it feels a little out of place next to the Canyon Road lineup. Beyond those highlights, the list doesn't venture anywhere interesting — no Colorado producers, no real exploration, no sense that anyone sat down and thought hard about what belongs here.
The by-the-glass program runs 8–12 options and covers the basics without any excitement. You're mostly choosing between California commodity pours and the occasional European selection. Rotation appears minimal — this looks like a list that gets refreshed once a year, if that.
El Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Tempranillo — $36
A genuine Gran Reserva Rioja at the low end of the list's price range — this wine has actual age and structure behind it, and it's the most serious bottle here by a wide margin. Order it and feel slightly better about the whole situation.
Gilles Robin Papillon Syrah
Most people scanning this list will gravitate toward something familiar and miss this northern Rhône Syrah entirely. Robin is a real producer making honest Crozes-Hermitage-style wine — peppery, savory, and nothing like the Canyon Road crowd around it.
Canyon Road Cabernet Sauvignon
You can buy this bottle at your local supermarket for around $7. Whatever they're charging here, it's too much — and there are better options on the same list for not much more money.
Gilles Robin Papillon Syrah + Rocky Mountain Trout
Counterintuitive, yes — but a lighter, savory northern Rhône Syrah has enough finesse to work alongside trout without overwhelming it, especially with any herb preparation on the fish. It's the most interesting move you can make on this list.
❌ The Bottom Line
Chautauqua Dining Hall is a must-visit for the views and the Colorado experience — just don't come here expecting the wine list to match the scenery. Drink the Rioja, enjoy the Flatirons, and leave the Canyon Road bottles for someone else.
University Hill · Boulder · Spanish- and Moroccan-inspired tapas and small plates
Cafe Aion's wine list is solidly built around its concept, and the daily 50% off bottles deal from 3pm to close is one of the most generous standing wine programs in Boulder — full stop. The markups at full price are steep enough to give you pause, so do yourself a favor and show up before dinner.

Boulder Social is a solid neighborhood hangout where beer is the move and wine is an afterthought priced accordingly. If it's Tuesday, half-price bottles change the math — otherwise, stick to the taps.

Via Perla isn't trying to be a wine destination — it's trying to be a great Italian osteria, and the wine list serves that goal honestly. Come for the pasta and the Barolo, don't overthink it.

Carelli's is a dependable neighborhood Italian with a wine list that matches its ambition — comfortable and crowd-pleasing, not adventurous. Send your friend here if they want a nice Italian night and a bottle of Antinori; steer them elsewhere if they're hoping to find something they've never tried before.

Gemini is the kind of place Boulder doesn't have enough of — a restaurant where the wine list actually reflects the food and the region it's inspired by. If you eat Spanish, you should be drinking Iberian, and Gemini makes that case effortlessly.

Goss-Grove · Boulder · Argentinian / Latin American
Rincon Argentino is a genuinely good casual spot for Argentine food, but the wine list is a missed opportunity — overpriced supermarket bottles with no rotation, no discovery, and no apparent effort. Grab a glass with your empanadas, but don't build a night around the wine.
