The wine list at Calvino's is short — 13 bottles, all of which you can order by the glass — and it reads like someone made sensible, crowd-friendly choices on a tight budget. Nothing here is going to make a wine nerd's jaw drop, but at these prices, it's hard to be too grumpy about it. For a pizza and pasta spot in Toledo, it's doing its job.
The list covers the obvious bases: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chianti, Merlot, Cab, and a Pinot Noir. There's a token German Riesling from J. Bäumer and a Domaine des Cassagnole French white that suggest someone was at least trying to stretch beyond the grocery store shelf. The reds lean heavily on approachable, low-risk names — Honoro Vera's red blend and Fat Bastard Pinot Noir are crowd pleasers, not cellar stars. Gaps are real: no Barbera, no Nebbiolo, no serious Italian reds to match the kitchen's likely strengths, and the 'rotating rosé' is the closest thing to spontaneity on the card.
Every single bottle on the list is available by the glass, which is either a brilliant move for the diner or a reflection of how manageable the inventory is — probably both. Pours run $7.50–$9, which is genuinely affordable for a sit-down restaurant in 2025. The Ca Furlan Prosecco at $8 a glass is a smart opener for a casual Italian meal.
J. Bäumer Rhein Riesling — $26
A German Riesling on a pizza restaurant list in the Midwest is unexpected, and at $26 a bottle it's likely the most interesting wine on the card for the money. Dry or off-dry, Rhein Riesling brings acidity and brightness that cuts through cheese and sauce in a way that a $28 Fat Bastard simply won't.
Dom. Des Cassagnole French White
Most tables here are going to default to the Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay, but the Domaine des Cassagnoles is a French white — likely from Gascony — that brings a crisper, more herbal profile. It's the kind of wine that punches above its price point and gets ignored because the name doesn't ring a bell. Don't skip it.
Three Thieves Chardonnay
At $26 a bottle, you're paying restaurant markup on a jug-wine brand that retails for well under $10. Three Thieves is a volume play, not a quality play, and there are better whites on this list for the same price. Pass.
Il Vescovado Chianti + Margherita Pizza
Chianti and pizza is practically a law of nature — the Sangiovese grape's natural acidity cuts through tomato sauce and mozzarella without fighting them. Il Vescovado at $28 is the most classically correct wine on this list for what Calvino's is actually cooking.
The Bottom Line
Calvino's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but its pricing is honest and the list has a few smart picks buried in the crowd-pleasers. If you're having pizza and want a bottle without worrying about the bill, this is a perfectly fine place to do it.

Zia's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it's trying harder than most Italian spots in Toledo — fair prices, a mostly by-the-glass program, and enough Italian producers to keep things honest. Go for the Antinori, order the Riesling to impress your date, and leave Castle Rock for the grocery run.
