Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Cactus Grill exists mostly as an afterthought — a short roster of familiar names tucked behind a much more compelling margarita menu. At $7–$11 a glass, it looks approachable on the surface, but don't let the low glass prices distract you from what's happening on the bottle side.
The list leans into California and Mexico, which at least makes geographic sense for a Tex-Mex concept — but that's where the thoughtfulness ends. You're looking at crowd-pleasing staples that could have been pulled from a grocery store shelf, with no real depth or regional curiosity. The Cuarto Dominio Malbec is the one wine that hints at something beyond the obvious, though it's technically an Argentine bottle with Spanish-sounding branding. There are no standout producers, no esoteric finds, and no sense that anyone sat down and built this list with intention.
Glass pours run $7–$11, which feels fair until you realize the bottle markups are running 144–150% over retail. The by-the-glass selection mirrors the bottle list: safe, recognizable, nothing that's going to make you put down your chips. If you're drinking wine here, stick to a glass — ordering a bottle is where the math gets ugly.
Cuarto Dominio Malbec — $44
It's the most interesting bottle on the list, and while $44 is still a steep climb from its ~$18 retail price, it's the one wine here with enough body and character to actually hold its own against fajitas and enchiladas.
Cuarto Dominio Malbec
Most people coming to a Tex-Mex spot are ordering margaritas, so this Malbec gets ignored — but a bold, fruit-forward red actually works surprisingly well with the heavier dishes on the menu.
Campo Viejo Brut NV
At $30 a bottle, you're paying 150% over retail for a sparkling wine that retails around $12. It's not a bad Cava, but there's no version of this math that ends in your favor — order a margarita instead.
Cuarto Dominio Malbec + Fajitas
The smoky char on grilled fajita meat needs something with dark fruit and a bit of grip to push back — the Malbec is the only bottle on this list built for that job.
❌ The Bottom Line
Cactus Grill is genuinely fun for what it is — a casual Tex-Mex spot with solid food and good margaritas — but the wine list is purely ornamental. Come for the tacos, drink the cocktails, and don't overthink the wine.

Set'em Up Jacks is a great sports bar that has absolutely no interest in being a wine destination, and that's fine — but don't come here thirsty for anything other than beer. Order the wings, grab a pint, and leave the wine list for the person who forgot to bring cash for a cocktail.

Basil Leaf isn't a wine destination, but with half-price bottle nights on Thursdays and Sundays and markups that are genuinely fair, it's the rare neighborhood Italian where you won't resent your wine bill. Order the Chianti, get the pasta, come back on Sunday.

Nest on Ninth is a view bar with a wine list that does its job without embarrassing itself — fair prices, recognizable pours, and nothing to get excited about. Come for the rooftop, order the AIX Rosé, and don't expect more than that.

Free State is a Kansas institution and one of the best craft beer experiences in the Midwest — come for the beer, stay for the burger, and leave the wine to someone else. The list is fine in the way a gas station sandwich is fine: it exists, it won't hurt you, but it's not why you're here.

The Bourgeois Pig isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — and that's what makes the wine list a pleasant surprise rather than an embarrassment. If you're in the neighborhood for coffee or cocktails and the mood strikes, the rosé is a legit pour at a fair price.

Meadowlark is punching so far above its weight class for a college town wine bar that it almost feels unfair to the rest of Kansas. The list is small but the vision is sharp — if you're anywhere near Lawrence and care even a little about natural wine, you owe this place a visit.

Cafe Del Rio is a genuinely fun Tex-Mex spot — just order a margarita and call it a night. The wine list is an afterthought dressed up as an option, and no one at this table should be fooled by it.

Juanita's is genuinely a fun spot for food and drinks — just make sure those drinks are margaritas. The wine list is overpriced, under-thought, and exists mostly to check a box; send your wine-loving friends here for the fajitas and the bar program, not the Chardonnay.

Casa Garcia's is a solid Tex-Mex spot where the wine list is purely an afterthought — and that's fine, because the margaritas and food are the whole point. Come for the menudo, not the Merlot.
