Wingman Metrics
Walking into a wine bar in Bozeman, Montana and finding a producer-grower Brunello and a Barolo on the list is genuinely disorienting in the best possible way. This is not a ski town afterthought β somebody built this list with real intent. The Italian focus is confident, not accidental.
About 120 labels deep, Blackbird leans hard into Tuscany and Piedmont, which is a coherent identity rather than a hedge. The Sangiovese game runs from entry-level through Brunello di Montalcino, and the Nebbiolo side covers Barolo with the same seriousness. The Champagne section is small but pointedly grower-focused β no big house filler. Gaps exist outside Italy and France, but when a list knows what it is, that's not a flaw.
Estimated 12β18 pours on any given night, which is a healthy count for a list this focused. We don't have the exact by-the-glass roster, but the overall list quality suggests these aren't afterthought fillers. If the bottle program is this deliberate, the glass pours likely follow suit.
Grower Champagne β $85/bottle
At $85 a bottle, a grower Champagne in Montana β where most wine programs are phoning it in β is a genuinely fair price for something with actual terroir behind it. Worth ordering a bottle and sharing.
Italian regional reds (Sangiovese)
Beyond the headline Brunello, the Italian regional reds built around Sangiovese are where the everyday drinking lives. These wines get overshadowed by the big names on the list, but they're likely the best QPR play on the menu and a smarter call for a Tuesday night.
Barolo
At $110 the Barolo isn't a rip-off, but Barolo needs time in a glass and ideally a long meal to show what it's got. In a bar setting on a tight timeline, you're not getting the full picture. Save it for a slower sit-down situation β or come back for happy hour.
Brunello di Montalcino + Charcuterie board
Brunello's structured Sangiovese tannins and dried cherry depth are built for cured meats and aged cheese. A well-assembled charcuterie board gives the wine room to open up without demanding a full kitchen production.
Daily β Half-price on select bottles every day from 4:30β5:30 PM at the barside. Applies to a curated selection, not the full list β get there early and ask what's in the window.
π² The Bottom Line
Blackbird Barside is doing something genuinely rare in Montana β a focused, knowledgeable wine program that respects Old World producers and doesn't gouge you for it. The daily 4:30β5:30 PM half-price window on select bottles is reason enough to rearrange your afternoon.
Oak Street Β· Bozeman Β· American steakhouse with emphasis on bison and classic comfort food
Ted's Montana Grill isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be. The list is fair, the prices are reasonable, and the picks line up sensibly with what's coming out of the kitchen. Send a friend here for the bison β and tell them to order the Riesling.

West Main Β· Bozeman Β· American Bar & Grill
Bay Bar & Grille isn't a wine destination β it's a neighborhood spot where the wine list quietly does its job better than expected. If you're in Bozeman and need a reliably solid glass with your burger or steak, you won't leave disappointed.

Downtown Bozeman Β· Bozeman Β· American steakhouse with bison specialties
Ted's Montana Grill is a reliable place to eat well and drink adequately β the wine list won't inspire you, but it won't embarrass you either. If you're here for the bison and want a bottle of Jordan to go with it, you're in good hands; if you're here for the wine program, you're in the wrong building.

Downtown Β· Bozeman Β· Upscale French-influenced American, farm-to-table
Brigade is the kind of wine program that makes you reconsider your assumptions about what a Montana restaurant can pull off β a sommelier-driven list with real range and a few genuinely weird bottles worth seeking out. Prices run high, and there's no wine night to soften the blow, but if you're eating upstairs on Main Street, drink something interesting and expense the Napa Cab to someone else.

Downtown Billings Β· Bozeman Β· Upscale American and European-inspired fine dining
TEN has the bones of a destination wine program β a historic room, fine dining ambition, and a genuinely interesting sweet wine selection β but the gaps in data around their dry table wine and glass pour program hold it back from a full endorsement. Come for the steaks, ask questions about the wine list, and consider letting dessert be your vinous highlight of the evening.

Greater Bozeman Area / West Yellowstone Β· Bozeman Β· Modern American, Gastropub-Style
Madison Crossing Lounge is exactly what a wine list in West Yellowstone should be β functional, inoffensive, and capable of keeping a table happy after a long day in the park. Don't come for the wine, but don't skip it either; a glass of Whispering Angel by the fire is a perfectly decent way to end the night.

Downtown Frederick Β· Frederick Β· Wine Bar
If you've never had Black Ankle and you're anywhere near Frederick, this is the easiest yes we can give you β a rare chance to taste one of Maryland's genuinely great producers in a focused, unpretentious setting. The single-producer format is a limitation, but when the producer is this good, it barely matters.
