Walk into The Wine Down and the first thing you notice is the absence of something: TVs. No sports, no background noise, just dim lighting and the kind of quiet that actually lets you taste what's in your glass. For Charleston, West Virginia, this place feels like a small act of rebellion β and a welcome one.
The list is short β somewhere between 8 and 13 labels depending on the night β but it's not lazy short, it's edited short. You've got Italian workhorses like Stemmari Pinot Grigio and Riondo Prosecco, a solid New Zealand rep in Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc, and California covered by Cline and Castle Rock. The Caymus on the list is the one big swing, sitting above everything else in price and prestige. There are real gaps β no RosΓ© to speak of, no skin-contact or natural options, and the Old World depth stops at Italy β but for a neighborhood wine bar in a market that's not exactly drowning in options, the curation shows intention.
Eight pours by the glass in the $9β$12 range, which covers essentially the entire list. That's actually a strength β you're not locked into a bottle commitment. The range runs from the easy-drinking (Voga Moscato, Riondo Prosecco) to something with a little more structure (Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc, Cline 7 Ranchlands Cab), so there's a path for both the casual sipper and the guest who wants to explore.
Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc β $11/glass
Wairau River is a legit Marlborough producer β this isn't supermarket filler. Getting it by the glass at $11 in a relaxed, no-pressure setting is exactly what this bar is for.
Cline Farmhouse Red Blend
Most people at a wine bar default to a known varietal and skip the blend. Don't. Cline's Farmhouse Red is a RhΓ΄ne-style mix that punches above its price point and drinks well in a low-key setting like this one.
Caymus
Caymus Cabernet is everywhere, and it carries a premium wherever it lands. At a wine bar with a tight list and fair pricing on everything else, this one sticks out as the outlier that costs you significantly more for a wine you could find at any steakhouse in the country. Nothing wrong with the wine β just wrong for this room.
Stemmari Pinot Grigio + Charcuterie board
Light, clean, with enough acidity to cut through cured meats and soft cheeses without competing with them. The Pinot Grigio stays out of the way and lets the board do the talking β which is exactly what you want.
π² The Bottom Line
The Wine Down isn't trying to be a destination list β it's trying to be your neighborhood spot, and it pulls that off with warmth, fair prices, and a room that actually respects the drink. If you're in Charleston and want a glass of something decent without the noise or the markup, this is your place.
East End Β· Charleston Β· Italian
Polcari is doing more with wine than most Italian restaurants its size in this market, and the Italian-focused list is a genuine asset. Just know the markups are real, and you'll want to spend a minute with the list rather than defaulting to the first thing you recognize.

Kanawha Β· Charleston Β· Steakhouse
Regency Morton's wine list is exactly what the room promises: polished, predictable, and priced for special occasions rather than value seekers. Send a friend here if they want a reliable Cab with their steak β just tell them to skip the Caymus and not to expect any surprises.

Pallotta's isn't a wine destination, but it's a dependable neighborhood Italian that won't gouge you on glass pours and gives you enough options to drink reasonably well with dinner. Watch the bottle markups on anything mid-tier and you'll be fine.

The Cellar Door is doing more than most restaurants in this market, and the Wednesday half-price bottle program alone is worth building a dinner around. It's not a destination wine list, but it's a reliable one β and that Filliatreau Chenin Blanc earns its spot on any serious short list.

High Thyme is the best wine list in the room by a wide margin β the room being Charleston, West Virginia, but still, credit where it's due. Come on a Monday, grab the En Route Pinot at half price, and order the duck.

Chambers is doing something genuinely worthwhile for the Charleston, WV wine scene: a real list, real staff knowledge, and a clear point of view. It won't blow the doors off a seasoned wine traveler, but as a neighborhood wine bar, it's the kind of place you'd actually send a friend β especially if that friend would otherwise be drinking house Merlot out of a cavernous goblet somewhere else.
